My family'll go to Malaysia on our own, not by tour. I know there's restriction for <1000 Malaysia Ringgit/ person upon in/out there.

Could anyone suggest to exchange $ here in HK or over there at airport?

Yes, no need to change Malaysia money in HK.
You can change the money at Malaysia airport.

If you are landing at KLIA then right after the immigration counter there will be money exchange counters. We changed our $$ there every time.
