We are planning to return Sydney in the coming Feb. My son is now studying in HK P.6. We will stay in relatives home first in Pymble and then rent a apartment near school. I was told that Killara high school has a high ranking. Does anyone know more about the school in area like the behavior of students, teachers kindness, any bullying in school? If my son goes to Killara public school in coming Feb studying Y6, will he be directly going to Killara High? What about the St. Ives High? Any comments about this school. My son is studying in HK local school and his english is not good at all. Will there be any assistance in English? Will it be too late to apply for school in late Jan or Feb after we arrived Sydney?

Any school in Sydney I guess is better then normal Hong Kong public school anyway, however, if you compare with our local school, there is two different type,
Obviously is - private or public.

Believe and focus in both type of school is different and I am not going to explain too much here.

Killara high school in academic wise is in a quiet high ranking. Most of the student are Asian = Tuition 補習。 so, if you don\'t mind to push them in tuition like in Hong Kong style is fine, but if u are coming to Sydney because u don\'t like the Hong Kong current system then I would suggest you to look elsewhere.

If you are living in pymble, and like public school you may search St Ives

Hope that help

http://www.killara-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
I suggest you email the school and ask directly if your son will receive ESL. At a lot of primary schools, ESL is taught.
The north shore area will have ALOT of asians, and I would say about 80% of them, Korean, Chinese, HK, Indians attending coaching colleges like North Shore, James An, Prior, Kumon etc etc. Thus it means it is just coaching that is driving the higher ATAR and probably because it is middle class suburb, the white aussies probably are professionals and that suburb has a low crime rate which helps.

Killara, Chatswood, St Ives, Pymble, Gordon etc, is middle- upper class so it is a safe area with many parents as professionals. Killara High performs a lot better then St Ives high but I am unsure of the reason really. Chatswood high does well do. But it is half selective.

Since you child is arriving in Sydney at p.6 with an average English ability, you will have missed test which you take in P.6 in March every year. Refer to here http://www.killara-h.schools.nsw.edu.au. Practice papers here: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/le ... t/ss_sampletest.php

Because you will live in Killara, you can refer to this for the schools that your son might end up going to by going to here: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/schoolfind/locator/, you can search under intensive english centre and select northern Sydney.

Your son must improve his English quickly to keep up, I arrive in Australia when I finished Term 1 P.5 and had to repeat P.4 which I think was a good idea in the end, because I had 3 years of primary school and I did ESL. I went to a public primary school, Cherrybrook Public, it was great. If your English is not up to standard, your son will get ostracised easily because teenage kids hang around in groups, white kids, sporty kids, have money vs no money, asian kids etc etc. In Australia, public high schools are best in the middle class - upper class suburbs because the parents are professionals in those places. If you were in other areas, the kids EASILY get into more incidence of drugs, truancy etc as a lot of teachers will be doing the discipline thing vs teaching. Also public schools in Australia lack ALOT of resources in terms of books, facilities and teaching materials in the poorer suburbs.

That being said, I did Bachelor of Commerce in Sydney Uni, the kids from public high school (i.e. not from selective or private) were really smart and mature and great at learning because they always had to do that their whole life, especially if you were not the Asian kids. Sydney has many many coaching colleges so getting the top ATAR mark isn't the hardest, the harder part is whether Asians get ahead once you land a job etc.

Currently in Australia, Australian-Chinese still do get into managing senior management positions yet.

Thank you all of you for the information.
I am really worry about his english ability. So, I think we will be leaving hk in this Aug and get him some private english coaching in Sydney before he gets into Yr 7 in 2017. Can anyone recommend some english learning centre for me?

Another choice is going into private school. Any good private school recommendation?

Thanks!

Thank you all of you for the information.
if your kid\'s first language is not English, he/she will be required to take an English assessment before starting school. I would suggest you to contact the school and arrange the assessment ahead.
