In general, Canon should out perform Nikon in small DCs.
If you are not in a hurry, better wait for the new Canon 870is (which is around 2780), which is an upgraded model of the famous 860is (still selling at 2380).
But bear in mind, do not use the flash in the first few months to protect the eye of your baby.
