Since the DSLR body is still in a development stage. If you don't have any lens yet, then i will suggest you to go for D70 coz' the body price is really cheap now. You can then have more money to buy better lens. Lens is more worth to spend money then the DSLR body.
Alternatively, you may also consider the Canon 300D body which is also selling at around 6/7k but of course, comparatively, D70 and 20D has more function available for advance users.
I use to adopting Nikon SLR camera and have 4 Nikkor AF lens (3 of them are fixed focal length). Hence, I tend to buy D70 instead of 20D. If I choose 20D, the prices of the body together with flash and other canon lens seem to be a 天文數字 to me. But I am not satisfied by the resolution of D70 (still 6M). I may wait for one or two months and hope that another new model of Nikon DSLR (learner grade) will be 推出. But the current price of D70 (just the body) is very attractive to me also. To maximize this function, I may buy a Sigma len for digital camera (17-55mm F2.8) and SB-600 afterward.
If you already own Nikon lens, i agreed with you that D70 is really attractive. For the resolution of D70, i think it is more than enough for daily use such as printing 4R and even large photo. I can assure you that if you always take a lot of photos, sometimes you will prefer a DC/DSLR with small resolution so that you don't need to buy lot of CF.
I recommended my friend to buy D70 over Sony 828, D70 is very good if you use it as a pro-consumer grade DC.
But personally I prefer Canon for portrait, taking photo for people. The color is more appealing.
You will see most people uses Canon system for taking sport event and other more demanding situations.
But then, it is a never ending discussion about Canon vs Nikon.
300D is not worth the money for it lack of control, not even single stop focusing. I used 300D, 10D and D70, I think D70 is good for entry level DC/SLR.
There are many second hand 300D kit in the market, ranging from 4600-5300. Since it has 2+ years warranty, you might find a good buy online.
I also bought D70 recently and many people talking about Sigma 17-55mm and said good value for money, do u know how much is it? I always use Nikon lens and now don't want to pay $7,000 ~ $9,000 for Nikon wide angle, too much to me...
Simga produce different mount for different brand of SLR/DSLR. So when you purchase Sigma lens for your Nikon D70, remember to tell the shop that you need the one with Nikon mount. Then the Sigma lens should work fine with your D70.
As mcben said, Sigma len also suit for Nikon DSLR. Of course, you need Sigma len with Nikon mount. However, I am not quite sure whether Sigma len for digital camera (17-55mm F2.8) can really work all function of D70??
