my case is similar to yours, though i did not have insurance. i have to move around australia when i was pregnant so i just had 2 doctors visit here and then went straight to the hospital for follow up when i was 36 weeks pregnant.

for my experience, i had to go to a GP for a reference letter to hospital (mind your that the GP here is in shortage so it is not easy to get an appointment right away). i have heard that some hospitals do not need the reference letter, you have got to check it out if you have any favorite hospital in mind.
then i have to make an appointment for the follow up. my first time follow up was carried out by a midwife which was a general check up and procedure briefing. usually they will have blood test or other check up to make sure everything is fine even though you already have one in hk. finally the doctor will meet you and discuss your delivery. generally they will try to have you seen every week up from the end of second semister. i found out that in public hospital you can choose your doctor only if you prefer to pay extra cost, which may be covered by insurance depends on your plan, otherwise you have no chose. not like hk, you would not be admitted into the hospital to wait for the delivery, but go there straight away when you start or seems to labor. they will give you their ward telephone number in case this happens or you have any questions about it (my hosptial did anyway). for me as my bub did not turn up side down in the end, i had to have c-section at 39 weeks on a scheduled date.

if you want to come to deliver the baby, better come a bit early cos the hospitals here generally are quite busy and quite difficult to make an appointment as early as you wish. besides, they need to check several things for you even though you already have final check up in hk.
Also , the most important thing is you have got to have your medicare card. so the first thing you have to do when you come here is to apply one as soon as possible. you wont get the card right away but you will be given your card no/ref no right after the application so you can use this no. to go see the doc or hospital.

you will stay in the hospital for a few days after the birth and they will also teach you how to breastfeed if you want to.

if you want to go to SA for delivery, better go there straight away, as you are PR and your hubby is a citizen, all you need to do is present your medicare card and your residential address.

they may mail some letters about the appointment to you so better have a living place that can receive mail.

i gave birth in Qld so SA hospital procedure may be a little bit different. but i reckon it should not have a big difference

hope this helps. :>

good luck

when you say "insurance cover for give birth", do you mean private hospital cover or medicare?

For medicare only, you have decided which public hospital you want to go and then live in the same area (or same network)

For private hospital cover, you can choose any private hospital you want to give birth but you need to find out if your Obs is link to that private hospital. You need to find out all sort of information before you go to see a GP, get a referral letter to the Obs you want and the Obs will arrange everything for you.
