The author is Bernice E. Cullinan. She is a grandmother already. She just shares her success stories on raising her kids to love reading.
This is a good book. It costs me just HK $20. Good value for money!
In my opinion, this book does not have hard-to-understand methodologies or philosophies. A simple book, just 152 pages. The terms there are very layman. Moreover, I found the book very practical and the ideas introduced are very reasonable and rational.
You may find practical guidelines there on how to choose interesting books for different age groups, how to read to them, how to nuture their literacy skills. There are separate chapters for different age group i.e. preschoolers, 5-6 years old, 7-8 years old, 9-10 yrs old and 11-12 yrs old. So, depending on the age of your kids, you may just choose appropriate chapters to read on.
There are some book recommendations in each chapter. However, probably, the edition of my book is a bit outdated i.e.1992. I am not sure if more up-to-date book recommendations can be found in the recent 2000 edition. You may check this book in amazon.
I got it 3 weeks ago from "Kiss my kids" in Mongkok. When I bought it, there were still two on the shelf. Only old edition of this book could be found there.
BTW, I really got good insights and tips on maintaining reading and writing as interests of my kids. E.g. create a book or newspaper with your kid; prepare shopping list; prepare invitation list; find an interesting book and read onlythe first few chapters to your kids, naturally your kid will read the rest because he wants to know the end of the story, etc.
