I'm a permanet resident and my daughter is a citizen of Canada but we are staying in HK. We are planning to move back to Canada next year. Please advise when (which month) I need to submit the application form to school in order to get a seat for her in Sep 2012. She's now 9 years old. Also, as I'm now renewing my PR card, when I apply the school for her, can I only give the school my Land paper or what should I do. I need to plan in advance and seems that there is only a few months left. Some said that I need to submit the school application in Jan or Feb?! If the school don't accept the Land paper, what else can I do?
If you would like to apply for a public school in Ontario,
1. you have to provide a "proof of address" in order to locate the correct school for your daughter. i.e. house rental contract, utilities bills, tax bill or property tax bill which under your name. It is because in Ontario, the elementry school is being assigned which base on your home address.
2. Canadian birth certificate - to assign your daughter to the appropriate grade.
3. You need to fill in an application from the school which is for filing record.
4. Your daughter needs to write an English assessment test to determine her language skills - ESL class or regular English class.
99.9% of the case, priority will be given to those students who's living within the school's catchment area. But for some good elementry schools, they may need to send students to other schools because they don't have enough seats.
In addition, there is no deadline for applying school in Ontario. But all schools will be closed during summer vacation. So you'd better plan ahead of time.
Not sure about the landed paper part, but as I know there is nothing do with your daughter's education because she has a legal status to stay, to study in Canada.
I may suggest you'd better hunt down a school/ where to settle first then everything will move smoothly!
