I believe what the Probate Registry wants is a search on owner. The purpose of the search is to check who the owner of the property is.
When you conduct a search at the Land Registry, it will ask whether it is a "current search" (HK$10 or HK$15, can't remember) or a "historical and current" (HK$25) search. If the Probate Registry said it will cost you HK$10, I believe they want you to show that your father is the owner before he passed away.
