Dear all Sin's mum,

I am different, I am from HK and will move to Singopare with my son later as my hushand is working at there now.
Could you let me know more about Singopare?
How you find HK?
You like here more or Singopare more?
I just feel thing in Singopare is expensive than HK, so I need to buy more from HK before I move there.
I will go there for a few day this weekend.

Hi taurus2006 and all.... I am Singaporean staying and working in HK for more than 10 years. Married to local with 2 kids now. My daughter will go to P1 this coming Monday.... full of worries! As I have to work and no own family here, therefore, very difficult to arrange everything based on own way.... Anyone has same problem? ~~

I'm Singaporean staying in Hk for more than 5 yrs only. I'm a full time mom with 2 kids. I'm married to a local too. How do you find the life here? I don't quite like the weather except Summer. It's stuffy & polluted.

My boy will be choosing Pri school next yr therefore I'm worried too. Do your kid went to local school or those DSS school? I don't wish to choose local school cos I'm afraid my Cantonese is not so gd. Most subjects are being thought in Cantonese & my son's Cantonese is not fluent too. However, if I want my son to enroll into the DSS school he will need to go through interview. So, I'm thinking of sending him back to Sin to study. Have you think of it before? Find that the education system here is quite confusing.

Where r u staying? I'm staying at Yuen Long.

Hi Sim,

My friend's two sons are studying in a DSS in Tin Shui Wai which according to her is quite good. Before this school start, the school did get reference from Singapore International School (Hong Kong)...maybe their style will close to...I don't remeber the school name but just know that the name is very long and open for a few years only.

If you have the chance to go back to SG to study...before that, you may buy a set of SG primary school textbook from HK SIS for your child to look at them first...as you may know...their maths style is different from HK...There is a funfair in December, usually follow a bookfair...you may choose the books from the bookstore inside the school and have a visit too. However, it's quite far from you...if not..you have a option to choose the school for your child...then no matter when you go back to SG, you don't have to worry the adaption...they use the same set book as SG...

Thanks for your info! Are you Singapore too? Is 和富慈善基金李宗德小學 the school which you are mentioning? I have heard of this school too but they have no direct enter to Sec school therefore I'm still considering it. And also I think not all the subjects are being taught in English. Do you know which subjects are taught in English or Mandarin? Thought of HK SIS too but the school fee is so expensive & it's far from where I stay.

Actually every yr I will go back to Sin therefore I can get many books from the bookstore there. How do you think the standard of Sin's education? Why do you choose HK SIS & not other HK DSS?

It should be the school name you mentioned. Thus, my friend's elder son goes to 李兆基中學..also a DSS..

Actually, I don't know much about the languages the school is using, if you want to know, maybe i can ask my friend later on and let you know...

If you are a citizen of SG, you may get some subsidize from SG government for the school fee of SISHK...this year is HK$16,100 but maybe subject to change (that mean without subsidize at any time)...

From my personal opinions...i think English is very hard...Maths and Science are above average, I have heard a SIS student changed to another IS in HK and said that her Science S1 is equal to SIS P4 standard...the chinese standard is OK so the students can change back to local school Form 1. Each year, there are some students change back to local secondary schools...of course, need to put some effort to learn traditional chinese.

For me, language enviornment is vey important for a child to speak fluent english and mandarin...Another concerns...DSS is usually new (except the elite)...don't know the public exam results...don't know whether happy learning will term to better results when compared with local tranditional schools whose students work very hard to prepare the public exams...

IS, another stream...when everybody is happy learning...it's ok then...also, they no need to face the completition of public exams with local school students...they just need to take the IGSCE or IB...

This is my concern too. DSS schools are new & most of their pri or sec pupils are not graduated yet. Same as you, I think the language environment is very important.

I have asked the parent regarding the languages using in that school, she said mainly use English and Mandarin. Maths and Science are in English. One or 2 subjects are using Cantonese, ie. PE...

Hi Sim,

Sorry for my late response as recently, too busy to even on my pc at home. My daughter was admitted to Pr. 1 this Sept in local school. For me, my hubby will take care of her Chinese, therefore, seems no problem. But, still... quite a number of schoolwork everyday. Reason for choosing this local school as my hubby was a ex-student there. It's a traditional and strict school, I think it will be better for my daughter as she's really too active and naughty. With the strict environment, I hope she will becomes obedient someday. It has been around 1-month in this school and I think not too bad so far. But, since my daughter started her primary school life, it has also changed my life! My life is ver occupied now... I need to do the checking of both kids' homework every nite, prepare breakfast, snack, check their shcool bag, iron their school clothing... as I sometimes return home late from work, especially month-end, it's quite a tough mission for me. I really envy you as a full-time mother....I think it's a rather tough but enjoyable job. I am living in Ma On Shan. ... Got toi go... need to play badminton with them now...

Hello Jabe-mama, nice to know that you are staying in Ma On Shan. I am staying in the same neighbourhood too! My son is going to K1 next year and I am still pondering over local or DSS schools. There are so much to learn about the educational system here. How did you make your choice?
